The USC American Lung Association is working in affiliation with the national health organization to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through education, advocacy and research.
Our Health Advocacy Committee is dedicated to improving lung health across Los Angeles and California. The committee actively participates in LA City Council meetings, offering insights and advocating for policies that promote better respiratory health. Additionally, it supports grassroots movements that align with our mission, amplifying efforts to educate and engage the community on issues like smoke-free environments and air quality improvements. Through these activities, this committee aims to create significant, lasting changes that foster healthier communities and environments.
Our Community Education Committee is focused on researching and creating informative content to educate both on-campus and off-campus communities about critical lung health topics. This includes developing engaging infographics, presentations, and other educational materials that convey important health information in an accessible and impactful manner. By distributing these resources widely, the committee aims to increase awareness, promote preventive measures, and empower individuals with the knowledge to make informed decisions about their lung health and air quality in their environments
Our Campus Development Committee is dedicated to improving the lung health of USC students through tailored campus-specific projects. Collaborating closely with USC Pharmacies, USC Student Health, and USC Residential Education, the committee initiates and manages various initiatives that focus on promoting better respiratory health and awareness among students. These projects range from educational campaigns to health screenings and interventions, all designed to create a healthier campus environment and provide students with the resources and support they need to maintain good lung health.

Recently, our community gathered at the USC Village for a cigarette cleanup event, focusing on collecting and recycling cigarette butts. These butts contain toxic chemicals that pose serious risks to our environment and local wildlife. Thanks to the efforts of our volunteers, we were able to remove these pollutants from our neighborhood, protecting our natural surroundings and the creatures that inhabit them. This initiative was an important step toward creating a cleaner, healthier community. We appreciate everyone who participated!
The recent "Take Down Tobacco" campus event was a significant stride towards promoting healthier lifestyles among our community members. Attendees learned about the impacts of smoking and vaping and explored resources that empower individuals to take control of their health. Prizes were awarded to participants, enhancing the engaging and educational atmosphere. This event is part of our ongoing campus outreach programs aimed at supporting those struggling with nicotine addiction. If you know someone in need or want to learn more, don't hesitate to get in touch with our team. Together, we're fostering responsibility and making positive changes in our lives.
At our recent white ribbon painting event, community members came together to support lung cancer awareness. Participants painted and signed white ribbons, which were then gifted to lung cancer patients. This meaningful activity not only spread awareness but also showed support and solidarity with those affected by lung cancer. Additionally, attendees enjoyed complimentary food and drinks during the event. It was a heartfelt gathering that brought our community together for a significant cause. Thank you to everyone who joined us in making a difference!
Our fundraisers at the USC main entrance are a vital part of our efforts to support lung cancer research. Some of our past fundraisers include the vaLUNGtines and LUNGevity events, where we see immense community support and generosity. At these events, attendees have the opportunity to purchase donuts, merchandise, roses, and other goodies for their loved ones, with all proceeds going towards advancing lung health research. These gatherings are key in expanding community support and awareness, highlighting our collective commitment to combating lung cancer.
In 2023, our advocacy team joined forces with the Breathe Free LA Coalition at LA City Hall to advocate for smoke-free multi-unit housing. Our team provided public comments, emphasizing the health benefits and community importance of establishing smoke-free environments in residential buildings. Engaging with policymakers and the community in this way helps to ensure that health considerations are prioritized in housing policies, supporting our ongoing mission to protect and enhance public health.
